AMHERST, Ohio - Whitmer runners captured the shortest and longest races of the day to help the Panthers place fourth at the Division I regional track and field meet yesterday at Amherst Steele High School.

The Panthers' Aeric Clay outran the field to win the 100 meters in 10.77 seconds to secure his first trip to the state meet.

"I'm pretty happy about going to state as a sophomore," Clay said. "I'm expecting to at least be in the top 10."

Whitmer's Skyler Schmitt successfully defended his title in the 3200 by crossing the finish line in a time of 9:30.49.

"The first five laps felt smooth and I wasn't breathing hard," Schmitt said. "The last three laps I felt good and felt I would win it."

Fremont Ross' Adam Wilhelm helped carry the Little Giants to a second-place finish in the boys team standings.

Dashing to first place in the 200 meters (21.88) and the 400 (48.81), Wilhelm helped his team compile 49 points. Cleveland St. Ignatius won with 74.

Defiance's Darren Flickinger ran third (9:32.44), and Maumee's Bo Waggoner was fourth (9:33.32).

Darryl Elston of Rogers heads to a first-place finish in the 300-meter hurdles in the Division I regional at Amherst.

Southview's Malcolm Campbell, Michael Campbell, Kwesi Kankam, and Aaron Waldie ran to victory in the 800-meter relay with a swift time of 1:29.30. The foursome also qualified for state in the 400 relay after placing fourth in a time of 43.24.  (Southview Pictures Below)

Rogers hurdler Darryl Elston nearly swept the hurdles for the third straight week. He posted a season-best time of 37.72 to win the 300 hurdles and settled for a second in the 110 hurdles in which he produced a season-best time of 14.63.

"I'm going to go out and try to do my best at state and go for the gold," said Elston, who placed third at state in the 300 hurdles last spring. St. Francis' Shane York captured the long jump with a distance of 22-2 1/4.

St. John's Marcus Waugh had a season-best 56-9 1/2 in the shot put to earn second place. "It was a pretty good day for me," said Waugh, the defending champion, who has bounced back from shoulder surgery in December.

Scott's Romen Walton placed third in the 100 (11.03) before he ran fourth in the 200 (22.65) and ran a leg on the Bulldogs' 400 relay team that posted a second-place 42.87 behind Cleveland St. Ignatius' winning time of 42.29.

Clay's Marty Vieth and Rogers' Marcus Thompson cleared 6-4 in the high jump, but Vieth required fewer attempts to earn fourth place and the right to compete at state.

St. Francis' Zach Graham finished third in the 1600 in 4:19.67.

Libbey's McGary, Rogers' Elston soar at Division I district track meet
Whitmer boys win fourth straight district championship; Notre Dame takes girls title

Libbey's Danyelle McGary and Rogers' Darryl Elston spent yesterday afternoon running around at the Division I district track meet at St. Francis de Sales as if they had plenty to prove.

Both ran with a sense of urgency. They participated with passion. They left no doubt they came to compete.

When it was all over, each had won three individual events and Elston added a title in a relay.

Whitmer captured the boys team title for the fourth straight year and Notre Dame won the girls championship.

McGary, a junior, streaked to first in the 100, 200 and 400. She broke her own meet record for the 400 with a 55.16, just enough to hold off Bowsher freshman sensation MeShawn Graham, whose time of 55.33 was also better than the year-old record of 55.56.

McGary won the 100 in 12.51 before closing out a perfect day by winning the 200 in 25.11. In the 100 she fought off Notre Dame's Chantelle Cargile (12.74), and secured the 200 by pulling away from Graham (25.24).

"It was a great day because I won all three of my events," McGary said.

Elston, a senior, won both hurdles events and the 200 and anchored the winning 1600 relay team. In each event he seemed to be a step, perhaps even two steps, ahead of the competition. His 14.57 in the 110 hurdles was a personal best, well ahead of Perrysburg's Ron Tisdale (15.37). He won the 300 hurdles in 39.26 and the 200 in 21.75.

Elston joined Paul Thomas, Chris Hair and Jordy Franklin to run 3:23.11 in the 1600 relay.

"It was real tough today, but I ran my best," Elston said. "I'm preparing myself to get ready for the regionals. All my times are improving with every race."

Depth was the key for victories by Whitmer's boys and Notre Dame's girls.

Whitmer, paced by sprinter Aeric Clay and pole vaulter Chris Laser, had 92 points. St. Francis de Sales finished second with 85, followed by Rogers 69, Southview 63 and St. John's 54.

"I thought if we ran well we were going to have as good a chance as anybody," Whitmer coach Greg Kubicki said. "There's a lot of tradition and the kids showed a lot of pride. It's a tight group. It's like family."

Clay, a sophomore, won the 100 in 10.93 and ran second to Elston in the 200 in 22.05. Clay also ran the anchor leg on Whitmer's 400 and 800 runner-up relay teams.

"This is really big for me," Clay said of the 100. "I'm only a sophomore. I've got two more years at this. I hope I can do it again next year." Laser, a junior, cleared 14 feet.

Notre Dame had 68.5 points, edging Anthony Wayne with 66. Bowsher was next with 54. Maumee and Perrysburg had 48 each. "We had a few injuries and a few sick, but we still did it," Notre Dame coach Christina Hulbirt said. "The whole thing is depth and unity."

Southview's Michael Campbell, Malcolm Campbell, Kwesi Kankam and Aaron Waldie established a meet record with a 1:29.37 in the 800 relay, beating Start's year-old 1:29.77. It was the first time the Southview foursome had run together in the 800 relay this season. "We had never run with our full team together and today we did and came out victorious," Malcolm Campbell said. Michael Campbell also won the 400 in 50.49. "I just ran my strategy. None of it will be an accomplishment until I make it to state," he said.

St. Ursula's Ellie Reinbrecht, Joan Anderson, Lisa Aubry and Yemoja Marotta won the 1600 relay (4:00.47), while Start's Deandra Reasonover, Candice Coleman, Martina Turner and Saundra Brown won the girls 800 relay (1:43.86).

Northview's Steve Waites won the 800 (1:59.07) and finished second (4:27.85) in the 1600 behind St. Francis' Zach Graham (4:25.69).

"It's just another step in the road, state is the ultimate goal," Waites said.

Scott's Vinnetta Sample basically led from start to finish in the girls 800 (2:21.35).

"I just stayed with my plan," said Sample, who ran the 800 for only the second time this season. "I wanted to see who was going to challenge me."

Maumee's Cory Huber won the 100 hurdles in 15.33 and Whitmer's Courtney Siebenell won the 300 hurdles (45.20).

Scott's Derek Bobo, Javon Haythorne, Roshawn Bryson and Romen Walton took first in the boys 400 relay (43.13), while Central's Ariel Wilkes, Alexandra Solomon, Stephanie Hammond and Sharise Calhoun captured the girls 400 relay (50.62).

Anthony Wayne's Ashley Evens won the girls 1600 in 5:20.96 and Rachel Beakas took the 3200 in 11:45.11.

Maumee's Bo Waggoner won the boys 3200 in 9:39.63.

In the field events, Perrysburg's Liz Allen won the girls long jump (16-10 1/4) while St. Francis' Shayne York was the boys winner at 21-9 3/4.

Anthony Wayne's Chase Sniadecki (149-0) and Southview's Bahiyjaui Allen (122-4) were winners in the discus. St. John's Marcus Waugh took the boys shot (55-7 1/4) and Scott's Leah Lewis won the girls (36-3).

Clay's Marty Vieth (6-7) and Northview's Lisa Johnson (5-4) prevailed in the high jump. Start's Brittany Robinson took the girls' pole vault (10-0).

NLL TRACK
Southview boys win easily
Bowling Green edges Anthony Wayne for girls championship

In recent years there are some things that seem appropriate to take place with the Northern Lakes League track and field meet.

Expect inclement weather to show up and make the conditions for competition less than superb.

Also, expect the Southview boys team to make it seem like deciding the league champion is a foregone conclusion.

Once last night's NLL meet got underway after a two-hour delay because of heavy rainfall and thunder and lightning, Southview's boys team made it look easy by collecting a third straight league title.

Aaron Waldie swept the 100 and 200-meter events to lead the Cougars to 151.5 points.

Waldie won the 100 with a time of 11.14 and the 200 in a time of 22.53.

Meanwhile, Bowling Greens Christy Titus won the 1600 (5:08.86) and 3200 (11:20.08) to guide the Bobcats to the girls championship, edging Anthony Wayne 124-123.

Northview sophomore Nikki Klahn raced to victories in the 100 (12.91), 200 (26.26) and 400 (59.85).

The Northview, Southview and Anthony Wayne girls began the day tied for first with 19 points through three events.

The Springfield boys went into the second day of the league meet leading the field with 30 points after the completion of four events on Wednesday. But Maumee (27 points through four events), Anthony Wayne (25) and Bowling Green were within striking distance.

Southview hopes to sprint to third straight NLL boys title

Southview is a heavy NLL favorite in the sprint events with (front, from left) twins Malcolm and Michael Campbell and (back, from left) Kwesi Kankam, Aaron Waldie and Gary Shannon.

Aaron Waldie has been running in street races with twins Malcom and Michael Campbell since grade school.

They grew up chasing each other around their Sylvania neighborhood. Bragging rights about who was the fastest runner was always at stake.

Years later, they're still involved in foot races. The only difference is the fleet-footed trio are Southview teammates.

Waldie and the Campbells represent the nucleus of the Cougars boys track team seeking a third straight Northern Lakes League championship tonight at Maumee High.

"It's really great chemistry with us," Waldie said. "We all know what we're thinking and we know how we have to push each other."

The Cougars have done a solid job of pushing one another in recent years. They've also been good at staying ahead of the pack when it comes to running down the NLL championship.

"It's our senior year and it's our last chance at it," Malcolm Campbell said. "It would be a waste to win it the past two years and not win it this year."

Waldie, an All-Ohio football player who will attend Hillsdale College, ranks among the area's fastest for the 100 meters (11.0) and 200 (22.6). Waldie is a favorite to sweep the sprint events at the league meet.

After winning the 200 and finishing second in the 100 as a sophomore, Waldie then finished runner-up in both events last year to teammate Gary Shannon.

Shannon, who transferred to Southview last year from perennial track power Elyria, has spent most of this season hampered by hamstring problems. He has used most of the spring working to strengthen his hamstrings. The defending league champion for the 100 and 200 has competed in a total of three races all spring.

"My doctor told me, 'To be so fast, you have the weakest hamstrings I've ever seen,'" said Shannon, a senior, who has been bothered by leg injuries since pulling a hamstring during the district meet last spring.

Shannon, whose time of 10.9 in the 100 ranks second-best in the area among Division I runners, will attempt to defend his title.

"I'm feeling pretty good, but I don't want to push it," he said.

Waldie expects Shannon to provide the most competition in the 100. Sophomore teammate Kwesi Kankam figures to provide Waldie with competition in the 200.

"We just expect to get first and second place and whatever place I get, if it's first or second, it's fine with me," Waldie said.

"Last year was my first year here," Shannon said. "A chance at a three-peat [team title] is really big," Shannon said.

The Campbells, who plan to attend Fork Union Military Academy in Virginia, have been steady contributors in the recent NLL reign.

Malcolm Campbell is one of the area's best in the high jump (6-4) and long jump (20-10). He is the defending league champion in both events. He's also been a key member of the 400, 800 and 1600 relay teams which own some of area's top times. Southview relays teams have posted season-best times of 43.0 in the 400, 1:31.2 in the 800 and 3:27.0 in the 1600

"We're just a tight group of guys who are all competitive," Malcolm Campbell said. "We all want the No. 1 spot. We don't like to finish in second."

Michael Campbell, the defending NLL champion in the 400 and member of the Cougars' relay teams, considers the Cougars' team success as an indication of their focus and commitment.

"We like running. We like winning. We like being a team and that's what it's all about," said Michael Campbell, whose season-best time of 50.9 in the 400 ranks third-best among the area's D-I runners.

It's clear to Southview coach Ron Primeau, who returned as head coach of the Cougars boys track team this year, the Cougars are running with a mission.

Primeau led Southview to seven NLL championships in 10 seasons as coach before stepping down from the position in the mid-1990s to spend more time with his family.

However, a league title this year may prove to be most satisfying.

"I think there was a lot of pressure when I took over the team this year because it's my responsibility to get them to win it again," he said.

Field-events finals are scheduled to start at 6 tonight and running events at 7. Northview is the defending girls team champion.

Track: Knight moves
St. Francis de Sales track coach George Schaefer called the 14-team field in last Friday’s seventh annual Knight Relays “one of the best ever,” and his host Knights were part of the reason.

St. Francis placed second with 72.5 points behind champion Whitmer, which posted 107.

Knight senior Zach Graham won the 1600 with a personal-record 4:27.87, and classmate Shayne York posted his best outdoor leap (21-3.5) of the year in winning the long jump.

St. John’s senior Marcus Waugh swept the shot put (52-3.5) and discus (155-11), and sophomore teammate Matt Lemon won the 3200 (9:39.40), and anchored the first-place, meet-record 3200 relay effort (10:46.17).

Southview’s Aaron Waldie won the 200 in a meet-record 22.64, Gary Shannon was edged in the 100 (11.17) by Whitmer sophomore Aeric Clay (11.16), and the Cougar senior duo each ran legs on the winning 400 and 800 relay teams. Classmate Malcolm Campbell won the high jump (6-4) and was part of the 400 relay effort.
